 FBI Channeling FAQs

1. Why was I charged but I haven’t received my background check?
Answer. The most common reason is missing or incorrect information on the form you submitted. We will attempt to contact you three times using the information provided on the form. Refunds can be processed until the background check is submitted to the FBI for up to 90 days after the form was received. A 100% refund will be issued for the first 30 days, a 75% refund for requests after 30 days but before 60 days and 50% after 60 days but before 90 days.

2. How much does an FBI background check cost?
Answer. $50/per person per request + shipping fees (please select only one shipping option). Additional services are also available for additional costs and can be found on our application.

3. How long will it take to process my background check request?
Answer. Applications are processed in 2-3 business days (excluding Saturday, Sunday, & major holidays) after we receive the documentation (*shipping time not included). The first business day begins the day after we receive your application. If we receive your application and it is not filled out correctly, this will result in delayed processing time (we will need to contact you and obtain a completed application).

4. Where can I have my fingerprints taken?
Answer. We recommend that you visit a FastFingerprints Fingerprint Capture location to have your fingerprints electronically sent to NBCI. Please click the following link for a list of FastFingerprints fingerprint capture locations (
CLICK HERE). After your prints have been captured, please either fax or email your application to the NBCI office (the contact info is at the bottom of the applications). Fingerprint capture is the easiest and fastest way to send your prints to NBCI. If you do not live near one of the FastFingerprints capture locations, please have your fingerprints put on two (2) FD-258 fingerprint cards and sent to NBCI along with your application.

5. How do I obtain the FD-258 fingerprint cards?
Answer. You can inquire at the facility doing the fingerprinting, or you can print the fingerprint card from our application onto standard white printer paper, and have the official print you directly onto the paper.

6: If I choose Regular Mail for the return of my background check results, and the results are lost in the mail, can I request another copy be sent?
Answer. NO. FBI background checks are deleted from our system 24 hours after they are printed and mailed. If your package is lost by the United States Postal Service, you will need to pay an additional $35 for NBCI to reprocess the background check and ship to you via ground UPS. We are not responsible for lost packages by the United States Postal Service, and we will not send out another copy via that method.

7. Do my fingerprint cards need to be notarized?
Answer. No. The most important aspect of your fingerprint cards are the formatting of the fingerprints themselves, and that you use the FD-258 card.

8. I have had trouble being fingerprinted in the past (poor quality fingerprints). Do you have any recommendations for how to get good fingerprints?
Answer. We recommend you use a cocoa butter or Vitamin E based lotion for several days before fingerprinting, to hydrate and heal your skin for the best possible fingerprints.

9. I only had one fingerprint card done. Do you need two cards?
Answer. We strongly recommend that you send two cards. We will accept one fingerprint card, but if your fingerprints are rejected by the FBI (due to poor quality), we can scan a second card if we have one. If we do not, we will need to contact you to send one and wait until we have received it, delaying the process. If you are not in rush, this may not be a factor. If, however, you are in a rush, you may want us to already have the 2nd card to scan.

10. Can you send me an apostilled FBI background check?
Answer. No, we cannot, but your results can be apostilled. Our results are FBI authenticated documents (which means they contain the FBI’s seal, section chief’s signature, and come to us in the required PDF format directly from the FBI). You can send the mailed or emailed FBI background check results to the U.S. Department of State to obtain the apostille. The link to the U.S. Department of State is on our website.

11. Can you send my FBI background check results to the U.S. Department of State for me?
Answer. No, we cannot; the results must be mailed back to you, the applicant.

12. What methods of payment do you accept?
Answer. We accept check, money order, or credit card (except Discover).

13. What website browser do I need to use in order to open my emailed FBI background check?
Answer. INTERNET EXPLORER must be used for Windows computer users. GOOGLE CHROME must be used for APPLE MAC computer users, and
Adobe Acrobat needs to be set as the default reader. This service will not work with Firefox, Safari, or any other browser.

14. Can I get an FBI background check, through your Channeling process, for employment or licensing reasons within the United States?
Answer. No; If you need an FBI background check for employment or licensing within the U.S. that type of request should be coordinated and processed via the appropriate state agency (or state police).

15. Can I scan a photocopy of the fingerprint card via email?
Answer. No; all documents must be submitted via mail, even if you are not currently residing in the United States.

16. Can my results be sent to “c/o” to someone else?
Answer. The only instance in which you can have results sent “c/o” to someone else is to your attorney. In this case, your attorney would need to submit a request to us on their letterhead, with both yours and your attorney’s signatures on the same document, along with the application, fingerprints, and payment.

17. I had records sealed/expunged and they are still showing on my FBI background check results. Can NBCI fix this for me and send me a new background check?
Answer. No we cannot. The research for background checks are completed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Should there be any questions about the information contained in the report, please send a written challenge request to the FBI’s CJIS Division at the following address: FBI CJIS Division, Attention: Criminal History Analysis Team 1, 1000 Custer Hollow Road, Clarksburg, WV 26306.

18. Can I check on the status of my FBI background check?
Answer. Yes, you may contact us in regards to the status of your background check. However, if your application was sent via standard U.S. postal service without tracking, please allow an appropriate amount of time for the application to be delivered before calling. Also, when calling to check the status of your background check, please provide us with the exact name used on the application, how the application was sent (UPS, FedEx, DHL, Standard US Mail, etc.), if the packaged had tracking, what day it was delivered and signed for, and where the package was coming from. The more information you provide, the faster we will be able to assist you. We understand that many people have time sensitive requests, and we are constantly working to return results as fast as possible.

19. If I include one address on my form and another in a separate letter included with my application, can my FBI Channeling report be sent to that address?
Answer. No. Your results will only be sent to the address indicated on your FBI Criminal Report Request form.

20. How long will I have access to my FBI Channeling report?
Answer. You will have 30 days to access your FBI Channeling Criminal Report (Identity History Summary Check). If you wait more than 30 days to view it, it will no longer be available. Once you view your e-mailed results, you will have 24 hours to print or save it to your computer. The link to access your report will be deleted from our system within 24 hours upon viewing. On the same hand, once we view and print your mailed results, they will no longer be available after 24 hours.

21. Do I need to have any special software in order to view the emailed results?
Answer. Yes, you will need a version of ADOBE XI.

22. Do I need to have a cell phone to take advantage of the email option?
Answer. Yes.

23. Can I use an international cell phone number for my cell phone?
Answer. No, it must be a U.S. phone number.

24. What if I accidentally provide the incorrect cell phone number?
Answer. You will need to restart the process and pay an additional $50 fee.

25. I have another question not addressed above, can you help me?
Answer. Yes we can. Please
click here to be directed to our Contact Us page and send us your question. We will respond to your query.

26. What is the cost to get my fingerprints captured for an FBI criminal history background check?
Answer. The cost is $20. No refunds are given after fingerprints are captured.

27. I need my driver's license reinstated. Can you help me obtain an FBI background check?
Answer. Yes, we can provide expedited FBI background checks for legal reasons or court related matters. Download our

28. If my spouse and I share an email, can the same email be used on both FBI applications? Answer. No. Each person must have their own separate email. Sending in more than 1 application with the same email will delay the processing of your application, and require NBCI to reach out to you for a revised application.
